About Us

We are an informal and lively group, interested in any and every aspect of the past – especially the area we live in. If this sounds like you, then why not join us? We hold monthly meetings at which there is a speaker on a wide variety of subjects of historical interest, often with a local content. We meet at Lightwoods House, Lightwoods Park, B67 5DP, just off the A456 near the Kings Head crossroads. More details can be found on the Location page.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month, at 2 p.m. for a 2.30 start. In the summer months of June, July and August we usually have outdoor events, such as a guided evening stroll around the area, a visit to a local place of interest, or occasionally a longer journey (see below for images of our activities). Always consult the Programme to make make sure of the date, time or venue of a particular meeting. A cover charge of £3 per head is made at meetings to cover room hire, cost of speaker, etc. You do not need to be a member to attend meetings, but if you do wish to join please see the Membership page. If you wish to join but cannot attend meetings in person, all is not lost: you will receive a Newsletter three times a year which gives a synopsis of each talk and contains other interesting information. We hold one meeting by Zoom each year to enable those who cannot attend in person to enjoy a presentation.

Smethwick Local History Society maintains links with Smethwick Heritage Centre Trust*, Lightwoods House Support Group and Warley Woods Community Trust, as we work via our different activities to maintain, explore and celebrate the many aspects of the history and heritage of Smethwick.

*Smethwick Heritage Centre Trust began with members of this Society but is a separate organisation which collects artefacts and photographs, working from the Smethwick Heritage Centre in Victoria Park.
